Description

Be part of the solution, drive electric! Electric vehicles are fun to drive. They are smooth and quiet, and their high torque – even at low speeds – provides instant accelerator response. This Leaf is just over 3 years old and still has good battery capacity (11 out of 12 bars) and 85 mile range, this car will get you anywhere on Kauai with one charge, except Koke'e (uphill needs a lot more energy). Switching to electric vehicles is one of the biggest steps we can take to reduce our dependence on oil and cut dangerous air pollution. Before renting it please familiarize yourself with the public charging situation on Kauai on plugshare. Charging at my house would also be possible if you stay in the vicinity of Kapaa / coconut coast / Wailua.

Features

Automatic transmission

Parking details

There is usually lots of street parking in front of our house and on the other side of the road.

Guidelines

No smoking, and please bring it back clean. I will charge a cleaning fee if the car is dirty.

Faqs

  • Have you ever gotten stuck yourself without a charge?
Never. Neither my husband nor I, and we have been exclusively driving EVs since 2014. Range anxiety is normal though, and once it goes to 10, 12 miles most people get very uncomfortable.
  • Are there chargers at all hotels?
Most hotels have chargers, or let you plug in overnight, but it's better to call ahead and ask.
  • How do I charge your electric car?
Press the button with a plug to the left of the steering wheel to open the charge port door on the front of the hood, then remove the orange cap from the charge port and plug in the supplied charging cord (adds 5 miles per hour connected to any 110V outlet) or on a public or hotel level 2 charger (adds 30 miles per hour). You can find the charging station on Kauai on the plugshare website or app. Most of them are free, but it's better to have Chargepoint or SemaConnect apps installed on a smartphone. Nissan also supplies a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EdJ-BuOxP0
  • It's less than 17 miles from the Waimea chargers to Kokee - why can't I go there?
Uphill uses a lot of energy. While downhill regenerates some of that, there is a possibility to get stuck, please don't try. If that is really critical contact me through the Turo site and I'll do my best to get an EV listed on Turo that will make it there, or contact MissionZeroHawaii to see if one of their long range EVs is available.

Our rental was a perfect introduction to an electric car. As a learn-by-doing person this was great for me, meaning, I’m comfortable not knowing at the outset what I’m undertaking, and particularly if the experts are willing to provide guidance. Sonya was accessible, communicative, instructive and patient -perfect.

Sonja is very helpful. The car performed very well. We travelled north to Hanalei and south to kekaha and had no issues with the car or battery life.

Thank you for the great experience!

ELEFTHERIOS D.-Apr 23, 2018

Sonja was informative and helpful. The car was great but I wish I had known upon booking the charge range was only 90 miles. Otherwise the car was great to drive around the island sight seeing.

Jamie T.-Apr 10, 2018

Sonja was a champ when it came to supporting my need for local transport. Informed me about local charging and the car was exactly what I expected. Absolutely reliable. I’d rent Sonja’s Leaf again without hesitation.
